The main house at 5850 Sharp Road in Calistoga

The property has operated as a private vacation rental since 2012. It is one of the most successful vacation rentals in the valley by a measurable margin, with an income record that can be made available to qualified buyers. It is also, with no modification required, a multigenerational compound.

The parcel at 5850 Sharp Road consists of seventeen acres in the western hills above Calistoga, the side of the valley where the road begins to climb and the parcels become larger. The primary house was rebuilt in 2011, a 4,400-square-foot residence with six bedrooms and six and a half baths, designed for the way larger Napa houses are actually used: long weekends, full tables, more than one generation in the same kitchen.

A second residence on the property, a 1,100-square-foot two-bedroom, was built by Connect Homes, the Los Angeles studio whose prefabricated work has appeared in Dwell and at the Hammer Museum. Its pool is by Modpools, the Vancouver maker whose shipping-container pools have become a familiar signature of design-literate residential work. Each house has its own pool, its own garden, and its own approach to the land.
